Post subject:  Shifter recommendation?

Having recently aquired a 1981 Dodge Ram 150 with the /6 4 speed setup I was curious if any of you had a suggestion for a easy performance shifter swap. The factory one is obviously very long and "sloppy".
Thanks!

Looked again tonight and I've got the A-435 truck tranny. Will that shifter work with that tranny as well?

The A-435 is the truck type trans and has the shifter built into the transmission. So if the shifter has issues you need to remove at least the top of the trans and see what's up. The A-833 is the car type 4 speed and has an external shifter.

No it seems to shift fine. Just sloppy. Was looking to cut down on the long shifter and go to something a bit better/sportier.

I think there is a plastic bushing on the end of the shifter where it engages in the transmission. If this wears out it will cause considerable slop in the shifter.

Well, sloppy is your issue. The best you can reasonably hope for is to rebuild the internal shifting mechanism and reduce the slop. If you want to be really unreasonable then you can spend a large amount of time to design and build a new shift tower with an altered ratio to provide for less shifter travel.
