 Post subject: Hard to start in heat?

A few months ago I rebuilt and installed a Carter carb on my 71 Dart. Ran great after the inital tuning. Lately thought it's been hard to cold start and today I had to push the accelerator to the floor to get her to turn over. Any idea what could be causing this? Could it be related to the heat in NYC? Its been in the 90s for weeks. Starts OK after it gets going and I've driven it. Choke looks to be closed properly. Hmm.

Maybe your fuel line runs thru hot spots. You should reconsider rerouting it over the valve cover and installing your fuel filter just behind the alternator so it would help to cool the fuel. Running the line over the original locations (and with the OEM steel tubing) sometimes causes hot starting issues by allowing the gas to boil after you shutted the motor off after a certain amount of operation.

Sorry. Meant to mention that I did do the fuel line mod. Maybe its still boiling in this heat? Maybe the carb needs some adjusting? Thanks

check if your float level is right. Maybe is on the "high" side and when carb sits with all the fuel inside and the motor in working temp it spits a little inside the plenum via the overflow tube... or maybe your gas vapor release valve isn't working. There sould be some venting valve opening the fuel bowl to the outside when gas pedal is near the idle position. Say in the early stages of the acceleration there should be some vent closing the bowl. If that's permanently closed maybe your intake gets "fuel mist" and that's why it's reluctant to start after sitting a while when fully warmed up.

Yep, double check all the linkage adjustments and make sure the choke is working correctly. Sounds like you may have a blown choke pull-off (or bad choke pull-off hose) since the car is flooding when you try to start it from cold. The resultant vacuum leak will also cause hot-start/hot-idle problems.

Make certain you are running the correct gasket between the carb and the intake manifold: It needs to be the 3/8" thick one, not the 1/8" thin one.
