how do you tell the difference

8¼" has a 10-bolt, horizontal-oval rear cover plate.

7¼" has a 9-bolt, generally-round-with-some-flats rear cover plate.

There are isolated reports of 10-bolt covers on 7¼" rear axles; I've never seen one in the metal or in the parts books.

Only on 1980+ 7 1/4 rears...(not many out there to see actually, most F-bodies I've come across got an 8.25" rear for the slant...)

7 1/4 has 2 1/2" axle tubes and 8 1/4 has 3" axle tubes
