I recently purchased a used black dash pad for a 66 coronet. I need to make it red. Is it better to dye it or paint it. I have paint that matches perfect. Does the dye actually penetrate into the plastic or is there little difference between Paint and dye?

I would use vinyl dye - like the SEM brand product.
I believe it is more flexible - paint may crack or flake
off if the pad is flexed.

I had my 65 Baracudas sun visors recovered but could not get the right color. I used i think dupicolor vinyl dye. Cleaned off a spot on my concrete driveway laid them down and shot them . They looked great and are in the Baracuda today looking like i just done them. Here is what is interesting the dye stayed on my concrete for over two years before the rain hell and snow finaly washed it off. My wife came out and looked at them after i sprayed them and barked about the dye on the drive way. I said no problem a couple of rain showers and they will be gone. Duh :D Thanks Ron Parker

I posted-up extensive technique advice and photos for doing exactly this what you are asking about, in this thread.

Mopaint is another option. $20 a can, but it holds up very well. Exact match too.
