Post subject:  Centering the rear axle

Seems a lot of our cars have the rear axle positioned to the right side. Is there a fix for this? I am cutting down an 8 3/4 housing to fit my a-body and moving the perches to use the offset shackles and I would like to correct this. Since I am basically starting from scratch, is it as simple as repositioning the perches a bit to the right to get the housing centered? I do a wonderful job of overthinking things, is it that simple? :?

It's not just the rear that is to the right, it's the motor, trans, driveshaft and the trans tunnel floor that is shifted to the passenger side. I never measured how much, I guess 1"-2".
AFAIK, the OEM axle shafts are the same length, unless it's an OEM Dana60.
If it were me, I'd cut both ends the same to the OL needed.

Thanks Cecil. I figure about 3/4" to the left would center it. Would there would be any significant problems with doing that?

The housing itself is centered on an 8-3/4, the pinion is offset in the diff itself. The drivetrain is to the right for more room for the driver. If you try and move the pinion over you will need 2 different length axles, and may run into vibration problems.

Sorry, may not have made myself clear . I am talking about the entire axel housing and all, not going to cut any different length axles. My right rear tire is closer to the outer fender than the left one. I figure if the spring perches were moved 3/4" to 1" to the right, that would center the entire rear end, side to side.

That doesn't sound right. I'd check to make sure your springs and frame aren't bent. With the stock rear, the tires should be equidistant from both fender lips.
