Finally got a chance to check mileage today. In an almost perfect 3-way split of highway, boulevard and stop-and-go driving, the car returned 22.4 miles per US gallon (26.8 miles per Canadian gallon).
I consider this very acceptable!

Wow, that is very impressive, you sure know how to tune a car. Did you have to change the timing chain (plastic gear)? Now we want to see some burnout pics

Well..."incomplete"!NGK ZFR5N plugs, gapped 0.040" 1964 Canadian Valiant distributor (cast iron Prestolite), new points + condenser, base timing at 10° BTDC New Holley Economaster 1920 carb New air filter and PCV valve Old(!) spark plug wires And the tires are a size larger than originally called for, so I ought to apply about a 4% correction factor and nudge those figures downward to 21.5 mpg (US gallon) 25.7 mpg (Imperial gallon). Still excellent. |

What was the ambient temp with this test? I drove my service truck from FL to NY. Started @ 11 mpg 85degrees. Half way was getting 13 mpg @60 degrees and at the end 16 mpg @30 degrees. I was very surprised with these results. |

That truck is running quite rich. The cooler denser air is burning more of the fuel passing through the engine. Could be as simple as a bad or misadjusted float. Assuming the service truck has a carburetor. |

| Thats awesome! About the same as my highway mileage coming back from Columbus Ohio (22 mpg) in my 66 Dart. I don't believe I would see that kind of mileage combined city/highway driving though.... Todd |

Service truck was a 2002 Chevy Express. (EFI) At the time it had maybe 3,000 miles on it. I've heard of better mileage with cooler air, but nothing like this. On the trip back the mileage did just the opposit, warmer air less MPG. |

I consider this very acceptable! Show off!  You do NOT want to know the mileage I got on my last tankfull with the 440 Polara. In all fairness, on that particular tank I suffered through *three* days of the kind of traffic where you sit still for 3 minutes before moving another 10 feet, lather rinse and repeat for 40 minutes with the AC blasting and in 100+ degree ambient temps. Single digits man, I've discovered single digits  On the plus side, premium has dropped back below $2.80/gal (US) (he says as if that was actually significant). Its days like this that make me glad my commute is short. I also discovered a few weeks ago that my 3-month old vacuum advance can was history, and its entirely possible that the fairly acceptable (for a 4500-lb big-block brick) 15 mpg I got on a long trip earlier this summer may have been without a working vacuum advance. So I still don't know what its ultimate highway mileage potential really is. I need to take another long trip
