Post subject:  904vs727
Im building up a 66 drag car.I have a 904 (66) can this be raced ok or do I need mods or scrap it and use 727? I am handicaped so I cant switch to a Manual tranny.
If 904 is ok what mods would you reccomend?

PS engine specs and rear end are still open. Just trying to narrow things down.

If I am not mistaken, all of the slant six racers, with an auto trans, use the 904. I use a 65 A904 with a Pushbutton shifter. My 66 Valiant will have a 66 A904 trans. If you are going to use a high stall converter, I would suggest using the 68 up input parts, just because it is easier to have a converter built with the later parts.

:D Cuda, use a good cooler and a deep pan for racing (the deep pan helps with cooling too). I've used the 904 series behind my small block V-8's for years, and they're terrific. I prefer Turbo Action stuff with a 5.0 lever and a B & M shifter (although my Slanter will have a Hurst I won at the track). Why don't you come up th Monster Mopar in St Louis next weekend? It always draws a good field of Slant racers. RICK p.s. Charlie, is it wishful thinking on my part, or does it appear the Southwest (i.e. Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas) are starting to stir a might?

I thought the 904 was good do you reccomend the shift body change? Ied Love to go to ST Louis ,However funds are tight this month. :cry: I blew up my pickup going to pick up 2 /6 cores, :lol: and had to but a new 03 one.
The cores are 68-74 w/ tube style heads.
I cant wait to get them over to the machine shop and have them checked.
Ive been "shopping" around for the build I want, but it sure is easy to "creep". Im thinking of 3 duce webbers for asperation but havent picked a cam yet.
Is there anything out this way after Sept?

If it will be a street driven car, and you want automatic shifting, use a "transgo" shift kit. If race only, use a Turboaction "Cheata" manual valve body. A manual valve body on the street is a pain(ask me how I know).

There is one 727 in the gang. The front engine dragster of Mark Dingbaum has a 727 in it simply because he couldn't find a shorty kit for a 904. :shock:

I am personally not familiar with the differences bertween the 904 and the 727 but I was told they are basically the same but the 904 components are about 25-30% smaller. Weight is always a factor in racing and rotating mass is a greater concern and I believe that is why most use the 904. Less rotating mass and still strong enough to take the load. Please correct me if this is incorrect since this is second hand info.

You have heard correct. As far as the outside appearance goes look at the tailshaft. The tailshaft of the 727 is a bit longer than the 904. As in comparsion the 904 has stubbier tailshaft. The pan gaskets are shaped different as well IIRC. The 904 takes only about 25hp to spin as to the 727 taking about 50hp to spin. One of our local racers running a strip only 340 duster tells me the 904 is around 30 pounds lighter and is worth about 3 tenths. The 904 is the tranny to use!
