Post subject:  Pulling the engine tomorrow...

I know it's pretty straight forward, but it's been 20+ years since I helped pull an engine, and I had experienced friends back then. Tomorrow I'm pulling the slant with my 18-year-old step-son (who barely knows which end of the wrench to hold) and a non-car buddy of mine.

I'm going to try pulling the engine and tranny together as a unit, since the trans is overdue for a rebuild anyway (and I think pulling them both will be easier, although I've never done it before). Most everything under the hood is disconnected. Underneath, I still have to drain the engine oil and tyranny fluid and disconnect the shifter linkage, and drop the driveshaft. I plan on putting the rear end on jack stands as high as it will go.

Anything else I may be forgetting? Hoping this goes more smoothly than I'm thinking... Thanks!

That's a long package and you'll have to get it at a steep angle and lift it high to get it out unless you remove the grill and core support. It's definitely doable but easier I'm not so sure.

I've plucked engine and trans together from a 71 duster on flat level ground without jacking anything up. Didn't have to take grill or anything up front apart (other then removing radiator) - just make sure you use short chains. Load lever may be a good idea here but this does add length to the chain. I think I pulled the hood but its been too long ago to remember.

Getting the tranny out from under the car can be a bit difficult but doable. You'd have to get the car high enough to clear bell housing, and have either a very low profile jack, or lower the tranny on the jack, slip the jack out from underneath, and pull tranny forward by hand (put something under tranny to make it easier to slide, cardboard, sheet metal, etc).

Don't forget oil cooler lines, tranny cross member / mount, neutral safety switch wires. Two people are enough, three is plenty. Remove anything extra you can, alternator, manifolds, ps pump, pulleys, etc as that makes maneuvering things a bit easier. Have some long pry bars, 2x4's, etc for leverage or to persuade things to go in one direction or another.

I've pulled engine out separately on a tilted driveway - not fun as it gets hard to maneuver the hoist around with momentum pulling it down hill. If the car is on a tilted driveway, push it somewhere flat if available.

Hook the chain to the top of the head. There are two bolts between the valve cover and the manifold assembly. These are the center line for the engine, so it will lift out without flooping over to one side or the other.

I pulled mine together. Had to put the front of the card on jacks to get the clearance I needed for the angle I needed. The trans and engine will have to be at a pretty sharp angle to do it.

Since you will be under the car anyway, I would just take the extra 10 minutes or so to disconnect the flywheel and bellhousing bolts and remove the engine solo. Rotate the crank by hand (or use a flywheel spanner wrench if available) to remove each of the flywheel bolts. Most of the bellhousing bolts can be removed from up top. If you go this route, don't forget to support the tranny. Later, all you will have to do is remove the tranny mount to get it out.

I don't know the feasability of this or even if it's possible with a slant, but I've dropped the engine and tranny by unbolting the tranny crossmember and K-member and lifting the body up.................

My friend and I pulled the engine out of his 1970 Opel GT that way. It was a royal pain the arse, and I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone else unless there was absolutely no way around it. Getting the front of the car high enough to clear everything was a difficult task that invovled numerous blocks of wood and supports and a lot of crossing fingers that things didn't fall.

Really, I would think an Opel would have been as easy as a Mazda RX4. 2 of us just lifted the front up (no jacks or anything), 2x4s (a car-body lean-to) to hold the front up while we slid the engine out, then we dropped the front...........

Lol, yeah, we thought that too... That sucker was a whole lot heavier than it looked. There were the two of us (in our early 20's), and his father as well, and it just wasn't comin off the ground without a jack.
