Stopped at an import yard yesterday to look at some Celica 5 speeds. While there I walked past what looked like a remote mount supercharger siting on a bucket. Seems that some Toyota minivans (Previa?) in the mid 90's had some sort of supercharger on them. Don't know anymore than this, other than they wanted something like $475 for them. Looked like it had an A/C clutch on the pulley. BTW, it wasn't a centrifugal unit, looked more like a roots style, but it might have been a screw type, also. No idea on cfm or boost limits. I'm not planning anything like this, but thought it might spark some ideas for somebody else, so I thought I would share the info. Price is still kind of steep, but it has to be less than a Paxton unit, and it would allow a blower without the trouble of a custom intake. You could even blow through an intercooler before routing it through the carb/TB. If anybody does research, I'm curious to hear what they find. |

Toyota has been using Roots style blowers for years. The 1st one I'm aware of came to these shores on the 1st Gen MR2 on the 1.6 liter 4AGZE. The Previa had a 2.4 liter engine if memory serves. That blower will be a little small for our engines. Mercedes used a similar setup on their 230K engine, but I believe they used Eaton supercharges while Toyota made their own. Since a 225 is 3.7 liters the Eaton M-90 off a 3.8 T-Bird Super Coupe should be a good fit. In fact I sold one of those to Dart270. The early GM3800 blower motors used the smaller Eaton M-62. They later switched to the M-90. The GM style Eaton's have a built in bypass valve that simplifies the bypass plumbing. Ford claimed the blower only ate 1 hp at 55 MPH in bypass. The blower I really want is a Whipple screw type. Higher efficiency and more boost that a Roots type. The blower I least want is a centrifugal since if you set one up for 8 psi boost at 6000 RPM you only get 2 psi at 3000 RPM. Centifugal compressors have an output that is proportional to the square of their speed which means you double thier speed and the output goes up 4X. |
