I don't have a generator for emergency power outages, and thought it would be neat to attach a generator head to one of my Valiants, maybe bracketed to the engine and pulley powered. Has anyone done this? Why invest in a new generator AND engine when I already have the greatest motor ever? |

Do you also have the speed control for the head unit. You will need to mantain a constant speed to have clean power. I've seen kits out there but most need the on board electronic in a late model to work. |

You want to use the engine in the car? A 4 pole generator head needs to spin 1800 RPM to produce 60 Hertz power. You'll need to couple not only the generator head to the engine, but also mechanical governor to control the throttle. It's possible you could use an add-on cruise control as a governor. You'll also need some basic safety shutdowns for over speed, over temp, etc. Fixed generators typically have a large cooling fan that is pitched backwards to push the hot air out the front of the radiator to keep the generator room cooler. I was going to have a generator for power outages. I even had a generator sub-panel added when the house was built. The power goes out so infrequently I either live with it of fire off my 1800 RPM antique 1kW Wisconsin powered generator. The Wisconsin is actually going to be replaced with a 1500W true sine wave inverter I bought for $200 of Craigslist. I just need batteries. I'm considering supplementing battery power with a 12VDC generator made from this 100 AMP Chrysler alternator I have on the shelf. |

Don't know if This will help but we adapted one to our animation engine on the float. And yes, it does want to be governed. Many generators run at 3600 rpm (as does ours) so we went 2 to 1 on the pulleys in order to get 1800 rpm at the flywheel for our hydro pump. We're running an older electro-mech governor with a potted brain getting its signal from a field pick-up at the ring gear teeth. We can hold a 60 rev spread under varying load when she's warmed up, good enough even for the professional stage power conditioner we use for our sound system. |

Maybe I should just mount an extra alternator, and go the voltage inverter route. Didn't the early valiants have the alternator mounted on the right side (where the AC compressor would go) and I could bolt a rig like that to my '65 (thus, turning two alternators) ? |

Sorry, I didn't pick up that you were considering an in-car set-up. Don't know how many amps you can get out of an inverter set-up but be wary of the cheap square wave ones as some electronics don't like square wave at all (learned that one the expensive way  ), and sine wave inverters are quite pricey.

Speaking of generators My Generac 7550 7.5KW generator's power is a little dirty for some of my electronics. Is here some type of filter I can get to run the power through for the electronics? |

We use an isolation transformer and a "power conditioner". The transformer's not so bad but the "conditioner"s expensive. Oh yeah, and does NOT like square wave (three guesses). |
