Either I'm confused on what each does or I don't even know what they do. Somebody tell me what the Kickdown does and what the vaccum advance does and do they work together? |

The kickdown measures throttle position and controls the timing and "firmness" of shifts accordingly. It also forces a downshift under hard acceleration to bring the engine RPM into a favorable power band. The vacuum advance does just what its name implies, it uses engine vacuum to vary the spark timing according to engine operating conditions. High vacuum conditions such as part throttle cruising permit more advance but when accelerating or pulling a load, going up a hill, etc. the vacuum drops and the spark retards to prevent detonation. The two are not directly connected as far as I know in Mopars. Some GM products had a vacuum modulator on the transmission in an attempt to optimize transmission operation to driving conditions. While it was not directly connected to the vacuum advance module, it did use vacuum to control the timing and speed/overlap of the transmission shifts. A Torquflite does this through the kickdown linkage. |

The BBS carburetor produces vacuum at part-throttle, light-load conditions to advance the spark timing via the vacuum advance module on the distributor, thereby increasing fuel economy. |

It changes the vacuum level at which the advance kicks in. Total advance remains the same.
