I am exploring the net, looking for some performance parts for the 273 I plan on rebuilding. I can only find stuff for 318's though. Is this the same block as the 273? If not, where can I find; headers, 4 barrel aluminum intake, etc? |

The 318 and 273 are identical engines pretty much with a few exceptions. The main one being the Piston Bore size- the 318 bore is 3.91 as opposed to the 3.63 bore of the 273. Different cams were also used with variations on valvetrain arrangement. Cranks, harmonic balancers are all the same. Summit racing should have the 273 parts that you are after. Russ |

The 273 and 318 are the same engine family, but there are differences. The block casting is different. You can't bore a 273 and make it a 318 as the cylinder walls are too thin. Your '65 has 5/16" intake manifold bolt holes at a different angle than the 3/8" bolts on '66 and later engines. The only company I'm aware of that makes manifolds to fit the early heads is Offenhauser. The exhaust side of the head is the same as a 318, but headers for an early A body are expensive and hard to fit. 273s through '67 had mechanical cams and valve gear while the '68-'69 273 and all the LA 318s were hydraulic. You can put a hydraulic cam in a 273, but you need shorter pushrods. The cranks are the same stroke and interchange. The damper is the same through 1968. In '69 the timing cover and water pump changed so the timing mark on the damper was moved. The rods are the same through 1972 or so. |

Had a 69 318 Charger and the water pump exited on the driver's side as previous years. I believe 1970 was the first year for the change to the passenger side, accompanied by the timing cover and balancer change.
