Hi,

I'm going to paint my Valiant but I'd like to find the original colour.

My fender tag goes like this:

MODEL A-L1_H-23
BODY NO 632
PAINT CODE LL
TRIM CODE H1T

So as you can see my paint code doesn't have a number after the 2 letters.
Someone told me that there was some Valiant with only 2 letters and that would be a specific paint code for THAT model (instead of the generic 2 letter/1 number code).

Ever heard of something like this?

I think I found the original color on the car (under 2 other layer that was about but not exactly the same colour) and it is a light gold (or tan).

I open to any suggestion/help you can give me,

There will generally not be a number after the paint code on a '65 (that didn't start until the new-style colour codes were brought in for 1969..."B5" blue, "FM3" pink, etc. ). Your car is a Canadian-built one, so the letter assignments may differ from the US codes, but LL in the US was Dark Turquoise Poly (metallic), PPG 12765. I'll check into what LL would be for your Canadian car.

I've looked at www.autocolorlibrary.com but the paint chips they show are the 2 letter/1 number style... That get me confused

What you are seeing on the original paint charts from 1965 is codes like "LL1" "QQ1" "KK1" etc. The "1" at the end just indicates single-tone paint (no 2-tone). Interestingly, even on cars like the '64 Dart GT that had a 2nd colour within the fender trim spears, the -1 suffix was used and the stripe colour was called out separately.

The '69-up alphanumeric paint codes are different. The first letter indicates the model year the colour was introduced, using model years starting with A=1965. The second letter indicates the colour family. The third letter indicates relative brightness or darkness, with lower numbers indicating brighter/lighter, and higher numbers indicating darker/deeper. The paint chip charts don't show the first letter (year the colour was introduced), usually only one letter (colour code) and one number (bright/light-dark/deep).

So: FM3 decodes as "F" 1970 introduction, "M" magenta, "3" relatively bright/light. It is called out on the paint chart as simply "M3". FJ5 is "J" green, "5" mid-bright/mid-light, while J7 is "J" green, "7" darker than J5.

Take a look at this 1972 Dodge paint chart to see what I mean. Look at F1-F3-F5-F7-F8 metallic greens and B1-B3-B5-B7-B9 blues, for instance.

But your 1965 doesn't use this later paint code system.

Then how do you explain that some 1965 cars (like mine) don't have the suffix at all?

I talked to a guy that have a 1964 convertible and his paint code is XX, but the original colour is like turquoise if I remember correctly.

Very simple: The codes appear with the -1 only in parts literature and paint charts. The codes appear without the -1 on the car and in the service literature.

LL on Canadian-production 1965s like yours (and mine, now sold) was Sable Tan Metallic, mix code 2352-2281. Obviously not the same colour assigned to ID code LL in the US for 1965 (turquoise).

Can I ask where you find this? like in a catalog or internet (if possible I'd like to have a link or scan of this.

Another question:

The mix code, is this all I have to say to the guy who will mix it or is there more information needed (like what paint company ...)?

It's from the CIL paint specs for 1965 Canadian-built Chrysler products. CIL = Canadian Industries Ltd., the original paint supplier. I don't have these specs, nor do I have a working scanner right now, but I do have a friend who used to work for Chrysler Canada and who has all the specs. I gave him the LL code and had him look it up. Those mix codes are old, but a good auto body supply place (Cross Canada?) ought to be able to use the old code to come up with a new paint of the same colour. Be advised that using the original code to get paint for use on part of the car won't work well, because the old paint will be faded and colour-shifted and the new paint won't. But if you're trying for a complete repaint back to original, by all means go for it!

How do I decode my tag that is under the hood which has all of the options.I'm trying to find out the paint code.i'm not sure which of these codes is the paint code...any help? thanks in advance....

Carefully copy down all the codes you find on the plate and post them here in exactly the same order and placement as they appear (or just post a good, clear, close-up photo of the plate).
