Post subject:  Running on white lightning?

What's the difference between an alcohol carb and a gas one? Is it just jet sizes or are there other parts that need to be switched? I saw an article on brewing your own ethanol, and with costco's 40 or 80 or 900 lb bags of sugar, whatever they sell, it might be worth a shot. The setup is cheap and the history channel told me pretty much what I need to know about stills. If it works it might even be worth paying for the ATF permit. Anyone know about these carbs?

Maybe an alcohol (E85) fueled car with propane seconday system, that would be good for in between batches of 'fuel'.

When you run drinkin' gas, the whole fuel system has to be compatible for the corrosive properties of alcohol.

Since you have to pass about twice as much alcohol as gasoline through all the passages in the carb said passages need to be ~40% larger diameter in an alky carb than a gas one. Some passages are already large enough, but the main metering passages all the way through to the boosters is usually too small. A stock engine might get by on a rejetted carb, but be careful of leaning out at high load and engine speed where those passages become a big restriction. I saw E85 for sale yesterday and was thinking about it myself. I'd probably pick up a Holley 2 bbl meant for alcohol and have annular boosters put in to improve metering and atomization.

I don't know if I'd bother trying to make ethanol myself. With the E85 at $2.13/gal it hardly seems worth the effort.

I saw regular gas for 2.07 today, at am/pm, it's probably 3 cents cheaper at costco. Still, making your own, probably under .25 cents a gallon, after startup costs. Storage might be an issue though. I don't know how big they make those mason jars...

Be damn careful, guys. Not only are there inherent dangers with alcohol and open flames, but here in Iowa, we had a guy mixing up his own bio-diesel, (maybe 100 gals a year), and somehow a local tv station got wind, did a small human interest story, then the state tax boys got an "anonymous" phone tip about him "not paying his fair share" of road use taxes. Now, we're talking maybe twenty bucks a year, and the state went after him. Pretty much killed his efforts. How's that for free enterprise?

You can't even buy enough supplies to make a gallon of alcohol for 25 cents. Then there is the cost of energy to distill it. The cost of transporting supplies, etc.

Not to mention it's illegal to distill Ethanol in the US for personal use without a permit. In any amount.

There are permits for everything though. Some site (http://www.ethanolstill.com/building-Yo ... Still.html) that sells eauipment states the cost can be as low as .95 cents per gallon. I guess it might pay to plant some fruit trees. Just a thought anyway.

I think it could be a winner....plant some plum trees,,,,,,,, make some brandy.......sell the brandy....by some 104 octane for yer Hemi RudeRunner.

My great Uncle Alex said there was 2 kinds of booze,,,,the kind you make for other people and the kind you make for yerself....he made good whiskey. ....He never did drive a car since he poked out his left Eye in 1912 in Peace River Alberta when he got Jill poked driving a Model T Ford.....never drove again. Made whiskey till he was 89....figured he had enpugh 10 yearold whiskey to last him till he died....he was 97 when he died....his twin brother was 101....he drove and didnt make whiskey.

Jill poked is a logger term for having a protruding branch or tree come into the cab and hit you.

My son and a buddy had a 6" diameter log come right through the floor of an old truck and jam in the back of the cab. It took them a while to chainsaw themselves free.

Its like jousting without warning.......

I think the real question is....who was Jill?

Loggers use a piece of old cable formed into a loop as a cotter pin in rigging....its called a Molly Hogan

Down here in the south we call it bushwacked.

I used to drive a windshieldless, windowless, and brakeless pulpwood truck as my summer job. When going through the woods I would crouch down and peek over the dashboard to avoid losing an eye to an errant branch.

Ny biggest fear was yellowjackets.
