| Post subject: | Electronic Voltage Regulator........ |
I supposedly upgraded my old style points regulator to a modern electronic version.......... Well after 6 months (3 month warranty) it crapped out. (had to reinstall original working points regulator) So I took it apart and figured out the main transistor fried. (no heat sinking). Well I did some searching and found this site: http://homepage.sunrise.ch/mysunrise/jo ... oltreg.htm This voltage regulator is a close match to the guts of my fried VR. The case of my fried VR is pretty small, and since I can't do surface mount devices does... Anybody have an old (non-working) points regulator that I can gut for a worthy experiment in making your own electronic Voltage Regulator? Thanks |

I should have one on one of my parts cars. I'll look when it gets light out. |

The Beater Valiant had one of the 'modern guts' points style regulators and it crapped out just like you stated...I had a spare and it crapped right out again...I had all the parts and a spare harness from an old boat mopar laying around, wired it for 1970+ Elec. VR, and the thing charges perfectly, no bouncing needle, no overcharging the battery, etc... I guess quality isn't up to snuff on many parts any more... Good luck on the experiment! -D.Idiot |

Why don't you just upgrade the whole darn system? http://www.imperialclub.com/Repair/Elec ... arging.htm There's tons of good info here, I went to the boneyard and got the alternator, reg, and a bunch of wire for under $30, grabbed it off something newer than a 74, alt puts out like 70-80 amps, I forget. I did the upgrade and couldn't be happier. Yea I know, Im leary of grabbing electricial stuff but got lucky on this, plus the car that I got it off of only had 56k on the clock so I figured I couldn't go wrong with it. Good luck with whatever you do. |

I do have one of the old mechanical regulators, on my 66 Cuda parts car. Let me know if you want it, and where to send it. |
