Brand new to mechanic stuff.

I bought a '66 Dart ealier this year and she ran great for about 6 months. Then she started emitting black, noxious exhaust, and there's even exhaust in the engine compartment. She also stalls at idle.

Can anyone direct me to articles on this site that can help me diagnose and fix the prob?

1) Black exhaust: Fuel mixture is too rich. Your choke is stuck on, and/or you've got carburetor problems.

2) Exhaust in engine compartment: You've got a leak at the junction of the exhaust manifold to cylinder head and/or exhaust manifold to intake manifold, and/or you've got a cracked exhaust manifold.

3) Stalling: Caused by either or both of the above.

Recommend you start out by following the suggestions in this post to get up to speed on what's under the hood of your car and how to fix it.

Transmission fluid smokes like crazy when burning. I've been told that you can drop a smidgen down your carb, with the engine running, and look for white smoke escaping the exhaust somewhere under the hood.
