I have a 64 valiant 4 speed thats in the exhaust shop right now. I just got a preview of the exhaust routing my muffler guy came up with and I'm a little perplexed. He's running the front pipe under the lower control arm. He doesn't believe I'll have clearance problems, and if I do he will surely hear about it and fix it. any one else run pipes this way? more to come when he's finished. probably thursday or friday |

Under the control arm...?! Are ya sure? That's way out of the way, kind of like going from Los Angeles to San Francisco by way of Topeka. Are you sure he didn't mean he wants to route the pipe under the steering arm? |

no, I just saw it. He put the pipe straight down from the front manifold and under the control arm. the car is at ride height on his lift and there is clearance. It runs just inside the torsion bar adjuster. and then over the steering. It's actually not the lowest point under the car. the tie rods and pitman arm are still lower. I'll let ya know when it's finished |

I'm very interested in how this comes out. I'm getting ready to do this on my 66 dart with 4 spd. and it does look tight for 2 pipes. Does anyone have pics of a working setup? |

Back in '85 I put a set of Clifford headers on my 65 Dart GT convert w/PS and IIRC the front 3 went down thru the K Frame and then back. Don't think any part of the exhaust was routed under the lower control arm. Maybe beside it - but that was 21 years ago and the memory is a little hazy on that. |

I know clearance is tight on the early a-bodies, but after my eperience with headers on my Swinger back in High School (a 318, admittedly), I'd never wat to go back to any exhaust that goes under the suspension. I literally bottomed-out my brand new Hedmans a few blocks away from the muffler shop that installed them. And that was at stock ride height. If it were me, I'd find another way. |

Exhaust is done and it sounds awesome. nice deep throaty acceleration with that six cylinder wrap. great idle sound. I think it sounds better then my neighbors 5.0 mulestain with flowmasters. however he hadn't fully checked clearances yet and the pipe that goes to the stock manifold hits the center link so he's gotta fix that and I'll probably get it tommorow. as for the funky front pipe routing, if it becomes a problem I will let ya know. |

I am running Dutra Duals on a 170 in a 60 Valiant and was able to run two 2 inch pipes down through the stock location even with a 4spd bellcrank and even though its tight it clears without hitting anything.I used 2inch mandrel bent u-sections from Summit and welded the whole system myself after the local exaust shop looked at it and quoted me a price of $400. Yes. I believe the pipes are 1.5" (to match the manifold outlets) and the dent was required for clearance. |

Those don't look like 1½" pipes to me, more like 2" (which would match the manifold outlets). |

You're right, I goofed! I just checked the OD of the pipes and it's ~2¼" from the manifolds to the tailpipe. |
