Got my head back, did the guides, cut & lapped the seats.
Looking at the flow path, and decided that a 125 Oliver tractor has better ports! There's a 1/4in shelf on the inside of the port, and casting marks everywhere. I'm really thinking about putting a grinder to it, I know I can't hurt it. :? Just smooth it out some.....any advice?

becareful about taking out the shelf. The shelf may help the flow.

Hmm, what year head is yours? My '73 head has a distinct parting line in the ports, but the rest is pretty good. Even the guides are well centered in the bosses. I think the port form is pretty decent myself. My current /6 head project is here: http://slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20588

My head is a '72
Trust me, this is not helping flow. It looks like they cast the port too small, and machined/drilled it out to fit the valve seat. I wish I could put some pics on here, to see if this is common. Intake is worse. It looks like the port is quite a bit bigger than the valve seat flow area. Oh well, "I can fix it!" :D

I had my head off to repair a burnt exhaust valve and seat. I had the head pocket ported to blend the seats to the ports. There was a lot of material hanging in the ports just as you describe.
