Post subject:  Unstable voltage

My headlights along with all the other lights in my car flicker in intensity. The voltage gauge (aftermarket) Goes from 13.8v to 14.5v about 8 times a second. At idle (600 RPM) everything is steady at 12.8v. Once RPM is brought up and voltage increases to 14.5 it starts bouncing between 13.8v and 14.5v.
I have a dual field alt and the matching voltage regulator.(74 Dart) Both are new.
What can I do about this? If I where the car ahead of me, I might think that I was being flashed or he had a loose headlight.
Is there such a thing as a faster reacting regulator or is mine bad out of the box?

14.5 is too high. Is your alternator really new, or is it a 'rebuilt/remanufactured' unit from the parts store?

Really old thread with info and lively debate on the usual fix here.

Bad alt brushes or broken holders will cause intermittant connections that could cause your problem. They are easy to remove & replace.
