Hey I am no mechanic but I can do a thing or 2 with some guidance. I am having trouble with an old Dodge pickup. Of course it has the slant 6 (an engine I only heard of once I found this truck). Well I have been looking around at a few things and poking at the truck because even though it runs after awhile it dies. It also seems to get over heated. I don't know if these are the results of the choke plate sticking. Hopefully that is all the problem I have. Except I don't know how to fix it. I have tried (and please don't laugh if this is dumb) WD40 on the pivot points for the Choke plate. but it seems not to help. Anyway I know it probably would or will be hard to help me without being able to get at the engine. Well the closes I can get you (unless you happen to be in Ohio) is pictures. I will go take a few of the carburetor and post them in a couple of minutes. It will only be my phones camera though so it may not be the best pictures but I will try to show it all. How ever it goes I know the choke plate should close when not pressing the gas and usually it doesn't. Thanks for any help offered, and before you see my pictures....I know it's an old truck not so pretty as some of the engines I have seen here. |

hey teck, It might just be my machine, but it appears your pics did not post correctly. 1. Is this a Manual choke? Meaning there is a cable running to the Firewall or is it an automatic choke - Connected with a rod to Exhaust manifold. Either way Try disconnecting the choke from the Choke rod manual/automatic. See if it moves free then. If it moves free with it disconnected from the Either manual or automatic pulloff scource then the pull off scource is your problem. If it still dosent move free then you have a problem at the carb or choke rod/plate itself. Get some carb cleaner at your local parts store and hose it down clean too - that can help. I can move it by hand it just doesn't stay in closed position, I do not see a way to manually engage the choke but I will go double check. If it is automatic choke what is the part that makes it close? Should there be a spring or weight or what? I am sorry I don't know a lot but I know some. Thanks for help. As for the pictures if you use the link http://doomsters.citysg.com/carb/ they should show up if they don't refresh a couple of times my web host sometimes gets caught up with to much traffic and nothing shows, just try again. Does the choke plate move freely if the choke thermostat rod is disconnected from it? The choke thermostat is mounted to the exhaust manifold and has an operating rod that goes up to the choke plate. Looking at your pictures it looks like the rod has been bent pretty badly and might be binding where it goes though the choke thermostat housing. |

Yikes, yeah, your choke rod is bent and misshapen pretty badly. You will probably want to replace the choke thermostat assembly (which is the rod + the metal box down on the manifold where the rod originates). Best setup for reliability and adjustability is one of the Electric choke kits. A stuck choke will not cause overheating, however, so you probably have other issues that'll need your attention. You will definitely want to buy the three books discussed in this thread. Also, when asking questions, please include as much info as possible about your vehicle. Tell us the year, the model, the transmission type, the mileage, and any recent work that's been done. This'll help us give the best answers. |
