Post subject:  Timing Chain

Hey guys,
Should I use the new Clevite timing set cam gear, or should I use the stocker nylon gear? Sorry if this is a "Duh.." question, but I thought I heard something about the cast gears shedding teeth. I know the stock one is lighter!
Work in progress..... :)
Also, should I replace the crank gear?

If you have an opportunity to replace the original '71+ timing set w/nylon-tooth cam sprocket, with an all-metal set of any brand...

...do it!

It's the nylon clad gears that shed teeth, not the iron or steel ones. The crank gear should be included in the timing set so there is no reason to not change it as well.

Tip on installing the crank gear.

Heat it on the grill or a propane stuff till it gets hot (about 15 minutes on high). Get a VERY thick glove and slide the crank gear on to the shaft and slide it ALL the way back (make sure the dot is on the outside!). When it cools it will have pressed itself on to the shaft.

Thanks! I'll use that trick with the gear, Jeb. Is there an easy way to get the old one off? Just press it off?
Thanks,

I used a standard three jaw gear puller on mine. Make sure you get it lined up correctly and it should pull it right off. Be warned, it is tight! Once you get it broke loose it slides right off.

I would also suggest that you clean out the threads in the end of the crank. On mine the hole was full of gunk. I wound up buying a 3/4X16 UNF tap so I could clean them out. If they are not real bad, a bolt of the same size and thread pattern can be used to remove light buildup.
