Me and a couple of buddies dropped the rebuilt slant in over the holiday weekend. Still got lots to do before fire-up, but I have a couple of questions... In both the engine gasket set and with the new Melling oil pump, there was a 1" long plastic tube, but no instructions on what its for. I notice it could fit perfectly in the oil filter standpipe — is that where it goes, and what function does it serve? I pulled the standpipe from the old pump, but didn't find anything... Second question: In getting the engine back to top dead center to drop the distributor, it needs to be on the compression stroke, right? How do I determine that? Thanks in advance! Pictures soon. (I chose a different color scheme... always the artist!) Almost there... |

Can't imagine what that plastic tube might be. Compression stroke: Yes. Determine it by looking at the rocker arms on the frontmost cylinder. When they're both relaxed (valves closed) you're at the correct TDC. |

Or... A fingertip sealing off the spark plug hole will feel the compression trying to push it away. Jerry |

also, when #1 is at true TDC you should be able to rotate them pushrods with your fingertips. If you're using a near stock cam, when #1 is at TDC #6 intake sould be depressed.
