Post subject:  Adjusting the park cable on 1965 904

My 65 valiant has a floor cable shifted 904. Sometimes it will not engage park. Usually when it does act up it will start to roll and give that great thunk thunk thunk noise of the park lock ratcheting. I've never had the housing cover off of my tailshaft and was wondering what the procedure is before I tear into it. Is there a gasket or would I just rtv it onto the trans. Thanks in advance.

I would inspect the cable for damage and then try to re-adjust it.
If the cable housing has been burned on the exhaust pipe, there is a good chance that the inner cable "core" is flexing sideways and not transferring all the needed movement to the park pawl.

To adjust, have someone hold the park lever in the "Off" position. Place a reference mark on the cable where it meets the housing then loosen the clamp bolt nut and tap the nut end to free the cable. Pull the cable out of the houshing a bit more and retighten the clamp, then test.
