i can buy an after market exhaust manifold that they list for a '70 dart - 225. i want to put it on my '61 d100 - 225. they do not know if it will fit. i called a junk yard and they told me their books say it won't and that only ones from the '64-'68 dart will work. this doesn't sound right. anyone know for sure?

It will fit and work correctly. It's not identical to the original '61 manifold. The manifold heat control ("heat riser") valve is configured differently, which doesn't make any difference as far as compatibility or function is concerned. The automatic choke well is shaped a little differently, which will present minor choke mounting issues if your '61 has an automatic choke. The easiest fix is to install the Electric choke kit. Other than that, the aftermarket exhaust manifolds you can find from numerous vendors these days are a bolt-on deal as far back as the first '60 slant-6 and as far forward as the last '87.
