Hello,

I am having a slant six rebuilt and the person doing the work claims that there should be a hold down bolt for the harmonic balancer. I have looked at several other motors and none have such a bolt, just a big empty space were it looks like a bolt may go.

I had assumed that this was for installation and removal and that their was not a permanent bolt to fill the hole.

Is there such a bolt and where might I find one?

Thanks in advance for considering my question.

Jim Roberts

The Bolt is not needed although you can add one in if desired.

3/4" X 16 NF thread.

The balancer is an interference fit - Most slants have never seen this bolt from the factory. If you have a hnkering to get one, go to the bone yard and snag one off of a Mopar Big Block Or small Block - Same stuff there.

If you are adding more power to your Slant It would be a good thing to add the bolt. Most of the time there is never a problem not running a bolt but I feel if its geting Rev up anything above 3500 RPM it is best to have a bolt. Any Mopar V8 bolt & washer should work.

Don't they all rev above 3500? Actually quite a few engines besides the slant never had a bolt on the balancer. Many of the older chevys did not even have the hole in the crank snout for a bolt. I have replaced the timing set on our slant and I used a 6" long fully threaded bolt, nut and a big washer as the install tool for the balancer. I left it with no bolt. When I get to the buildup I have planned I will be adding a bolt, just because its so easy and one less thing to worry about. Cheap insurance, but you don't need it on a stock rpm range engine when everything fits as it should. If the balancer fit is not right, a bolt won't fix it.
