Well, without the alternator, the Engine will not run. It is installed on the Engine via brackets and the Engine does make it function, thus supporting the ignition and charging the battery, which starts the Engine.
Seems like an OK spot to me.

these are the ones from summit http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch ... o=10#rstop does it need to be one wire capable? internal or external regulator? and what about the og voltage regulator?or switch to an electronic one? 60 or 75 amps? I am using a electronic distributor with msd6al so which one would be right for me? for 69 valiant Thanks |

The PMW 7019 would be close to stock. Personally I would just buy one for a mid '70s pickup with a 360 from the local parts store. Or as Dan will say "have a local reputable shop rebuild your current one. All the rebuilt ones are cheap chinese junk." or something to that effect. |

Another option is to use a Nippondenso alternator from an early '90's Dodge truck (I've heard Toyota trucks from same era also). They have a V belt pully and an external regulator to use with your existing wiring. Run an extra 8 guage wire from the output stud to the starter relay to take the load off the ammeter (if still functioning) due to the higher output. A couple of people I know that have used the denso alternator told me they had to grind some material off the lower alternator mount to line up properly. |

So you've never run without an alternator when the alternator bearings seized (and snapped the belt) and then limped home on the battery.................

Well....uh, no. I was just having fun with Dan.  Matadem, you can use your existing regulator. The connections for the fields at the alternator are different though. |

Actually I have had to make a dash for home with a dead alternator. The battery was so low, that I had to turn off the lights to keep the engine running (points ingnition). With the lights on, there wasn't enough amps to fire the plugs. |

I was driving my 340 Plymouth North from Cape Cod on I95 and my alternator went. Naturally it was getting dark and raining ice. I made it halfway up a ramp into a bad area where cars were skidding around the corner in the dark and swerving at the last minute. A good Samaritan stopped and gave me a set of reflective triangles. Then I made it to a church and the minister called AAA. It just shows, God loves his A-body Barracudas.
