| Post subject: | The Big V-8 Swap Question |
So I'm contemplating the big switch to a 318. Can anyone tell me whether I could take a small block (340 I guess) 727 and bolt it up to a 318 out of a '74 Dart Swinger? Does the 727 have similar shift linkage and stuff that would make it an easy replacement for a 904? Since a tranny swap would be required, I'd like to go straight to the strongest one in anticipation of any future engine mods. |

SB 727 will bolt right up (and they came on 318s as well as 340s & 360s). Shift linkage should be the same; not sure about kickdown linkage tho. |

The transmission kickdown linkage has to be made longer to work. I cut mine and welded in an extension piece. The throttle cable hold down bracket also has to be modified for clearance issues. |

The 727 might be a real close fit in the trans tunnel. You will have to change driveshafts too. If the 318 is fairly stock I would think about a well put together 904, unless you already have the 727. It will take less power to turn and should hold up just fine, aside from dropping right in. |

After poking around at Moparts I tend to feel the same way you do, AnotherSix. Some guys there feel very strongly that a 904 is plenty stout enough to handle lots of power if prepped right. I'm not planning on making a power monster so I bet even a stock V-8 904 will be ok for my cruiser. |

I have a 904 in my car, and my uncle runs one in his 10.5 challenger with trans brake. They are tough trannies. I see no need to go to a 727 until you are dipping into the 9s IMO I have run the heck out of mine and never had a problem. |

Well, after poking around on the net a bit more I have decided that when I do a V-8 swap it will be accompanied by a switch to an A-500 overdrive automatic. I just bought a MIG welder and I look forward to the modifications this tranny would require in my floorpan, crossmembers and such. |

It's happening... it's happening.... I just got back from picking up a complete 318 from some 77-79 van. It was only fifty bucks so even if the insides are screwed I could probably make my money back on the parts. Now for an A-500... |
