Those dots can be annoying. If you dont have th equipment to correctly degree that cam try this Turn crank by hand till # 1 and 6 are at TDC. Probably you will want to remove the head for the above step. Then you will want to try taking the cam gear and try advancing it or retarding it one tooth. Eye it up and the two dots and the centerlines of the crank and cam should be in line with a straightedge. Then Put the head back on. Roll the motor around by hand with the pushrods installed for #1 Cyl. and stop it at TDC again when both Rocker arms are completly up as high as they will go (Valves closed) then stab in Dist as shown here. ![]() (btw), I also take the time to dry adjust the valves here too. Head intalled w/o a gasket I set them to.000 I / .010 E Others will chime in and share their experinces too. Greg |

Do you have a degree wheel? DD |

the dots have always been in that location but if you trying to jump 1 tooth that equals 16deg so if you dont have offset bushing just use the dots, they can be of a few deg that is why a dial gauge and deg wheel would help. |

No I don't have any kind of degree kit. Well I guess I feel comfortable that they are correctly installed. Can someone take a look at a balancer that they have off and see if the timing mark is in line with the keyway? |

the balancer key and timing marks only determine spark timing, the cam and crank marks set vavle timing. that is the important setting to get full potenial for you cam, to advanced no top end to retarded no bottom end, some auto parts stores rent dial gauges or machine shops, the degree wheel you have to buy from speed parts supplier or if you have a lot of patients make a wheel with 360degs markings with a protractor. the offset bushing are the same as big block dodge and small block chevy kits fairly cheap through performance catologes |

Very helpful responses. However I need to establish if the outer ring on my balancer has moved. That's why I was hoping that someone could look at one of their balancers and see if the keyway and timing mark are in line. I'd like to remark it and I think the keywy and mark sould be together. |

i check a stock forged balancer and the crank keyway is about 20degs from timing mark for 0degs. if you need to check yours, the best way is on the engine with head removed and #1 cyl at top dead center, the timing cover mark and the balancer mark should aline, if not cut new mark in balancer and paint it white. |

The crank key and the timing notch on the balancer are not lined up, together. The amount they are off, depends on the year of the balancer. Different years had the timing tab in different locations, and the mark on the damper was changed to match. |

You really need to degree-in the cam. I pulled another thread forward for your review. There are other threads posted tat go into cam degreeing in detail. Also, see this like: http://www.hotrodder.com/kwkride/degree.html This is important, the marks you see don't squat until you do some simple checks to ensure they are correct. Learn to degree a cam, keep asking questions, you will be rewarded for taking the time to ensure your cam is "phased" correctly with the crank & pistons. DD |
