I'm looking for a supplier of 4 or 6ga fusible link for the Tidewater Mopar Club giveaway car - (http://www.tidewatermoparclub.com/furry07.html); it is getting an extra-HD (2 ga) electrical system. So far, I've been unable to find anything heavier than #8, and I'd like to avoid having to go to a 200A fuse and the attendant hardware. I've hit all my usual sources w/o luck, so if somebody could point us to a vendor we'd appreciate it. |

H'mm. What exactly is this 2ga circuit you're trying to protect? Remember, if this extra-big fuselink is your only main circuit protection, it will not protect you at all unless something that never happens chooses to happen (such as the battery positive cable shorting directly to ground downstream of the fuselink). Anything shy of that level of disaster, and the whole car will burn, burn, burn. |

Thanks Dan. I think I really need ~200A, and the link is really to prevent burning the car down if the mains get shorted. All subsystems have their own fuses or breakers, but there'll be something like 40' of #2 cable running through the passenger compartment that can only be protected by this link or something similar - anything smaller would fry in "normal" use. I figured a #6 fusible link is the smallest we should use, and it's been hard to find. Our plan calls for 2 HD air compressors to let the car "dance"; that takes real power, so the main wiring is all #2 cable and we're planning on a ~200A alternator. I've already put in a 100A auto-reset breaker to protect the battery isolator diodes (with 120W headlight bulb across the breaker as a snubber, just in case). I put in a 100A (1000A surge) switch to bypass the isolator in case the starting battery is flat. I also put in a fan to keep the cool the diodes and bulb. Both the main and aux battery are in the trunk, so a lot of power has to run between the front and rear of the car and I anticipate at least the possiblity that one of the cables will get shorted out somehow. Sometimes club members show more enthusiasm than sense. The Fury will also keep it's factory ammeter, so there are 2 runs to the back and a (re)calibration shunt in the trunk to rescale the factory ammeter (we don't want it to melt), and we'll probably use 2x#2 cables for the starter run. You made a good point - I'm planning to use factory-sized fusible link (~#16) for to feed to stock fusebox and dash. The underhood system isn't nailed down yet, but will use ~30A relays to feed the ignition and lights; I'm afraid the old switches aren't up to extra-HD loads. This is an most unsual application; I don't want to see any combination of demands (compressors + convertable top + HP stereo + ???) cause a undersize fusible link to blow. I've considered a 200A fuse or breaker, but it'll take considerable effort to fabricate a suitable holder for it that fits. I don't have exact specs for the compressors, but they should run ~30A each; the convertible top motor about the same, and the proposed (as yet unsponsored) 1000W stereo another 100A, so 200A is a reasonable goal. I expect the car will only be danced at engine idle, so the aux battery may have to provide a lot of current. I have considered using antimony/tin alloy to try to fabricate my own fusible link, but that is more than a little tricky and I think there must be something out there used for electric cars or such that would be suitable. |

Our club president decided that the last TMC charity car he's heading up should be something very special. A customized 1968 Fury convertible w/ lambo doors, PW, PB, (dancing) air suspension, stroked 440, custom Legendary interior, frenched in bumpers and lights. etc. is not something you see every day... When it's further along we'll start selling raffle tickets for it. |

I would like to stress that this project did NOT destroy an kind of decent car; this car would have been crushed by anybody with less vision or more sense.
