Stock cam best for economy?

Post subject:  Stock cam best for economy?
Pretty much what the subject says. Since I'll be tuning the slant in my Duster with economy in mind, will the stock cam be best for this, or is there a better cam available?

The laws of what usually work would suggest the stock cam is the best choice. However, gearing and vehicle weight might dictate a cam with more lift and duration. If the cam is too small to operate the engine efficiently where it needs to, then mpg suffers. I went with a Comp Cams 252M in my '70 Duster and the economy was much better than stock. I also made several other changes with I dropped in the new engine, so I can't say for sure if that cam was the best mpg cam for that application.

I have a Comp 252 in my 360. It didn't hurt! Lots of power. I think the cam in the 72 motors is close to an RV type grind. I wish I had gone with a dual pattern cam on my 360 (Crane)

If you call Crane they will ask gearing, compression, tire height and RPM you want to be at.

I don't know if they sell slant cams.

I found a Comp 252 for 225 slants (Summit even carries it, surprisingly). If it'll net me some extra power without hurting mileage at all, I'll go for it once I get around to doing the Super Six conversion (figure I'll save up the money, collect parts, and do the power/economy mods at about the same time). My focus is economy, but I certainly won't turn up my nose to something that'll aid in power without hurting gas mileage. If I can hold Sunset Hill in Spokane (you eastern WA boys know what I'm talking about) without having to downshift, I'll be good to go :D

Edit: I'm going to plan on installing a new timing set (Comp a good choice too?) when I install the new cam. Would it be recommended to install new lifters and pushrods as well since I'll already have the valvetrain apart?

See what Crane sells for the slant. Maybe Isky too. I would look for a dual pattern cam. That is my regret on mine.

Crane no longer has cams for the slant. What is wrong with the Erson cam? They are giving us a pretty good deal.

What is the specs for the 72 slant cam?

I have a MP mild HP cam. I forgot what the specs are.

'71-'80 stock cam is 244° intake duration, 244° exhaust duration, 26° overlap, 0.414" lift.

The Mopar Performance P4120243 cam (which I have and like a lot in my '62) is 244° - 244° - 28° - 0.436".

I will not use a Comp cam. Seen too many problems with 'em! Oil passages improperly drilled, lobes improperly ground, inability to get the engine to run right at any lash setting. Some poeple have fine luck with 'em. I'm not a gambler.

What kind of mileage drops do you get with that MP cam? Actually the stock cam sounds like a Wolverine RV (now Melling) cam I bought before I bought my Comp for the van.

My experience is the MP 244/244/28/436 cam, properly installed, gives better driveability and economy than the '60-'64, '65-'70 or '71-'80 stock cams.

I set mine up at 104 installed, and it gives good midrange, but is a bit lazy down low (8.0:1 comp - actual stock comp). I would recommend installing at 101-102 unless you have higher than stock comp.
