I have read two Holley books, but have yet to understand how to tune holley 4160's. Like how to figure out whether the shooter is the right size, the shooter cam is the right one, the power valve setup, the secondary spring choice. Is there a way to isolate the effects of each one individually? I am sure there is a thread on this site somewhere. I need a systematic way to optimize each part. Or at least know how and when they function.

I will take a stab at keeping it simple. I am sure Slant Six Dan can point you to a in-depth thread though.
When we are at the track racing these are some basic changes.

Assuming timing and everything else is spot on and just looking at fuel delivery.....

For a bog off idle you need a healthier squirt. That can be improved at least three ways. More aggressive pump cam, larger squirters or switching from the 30cc pump to the 50cc pump.

For a bog when the back doors open, use a stiffer spring to keep them from opening too soon. You are keeping the engine from being drowned by too much fuel.

When you fine tune, there is alot more to consider depending on your engine build. Hope this helps get you going!
