Hi Guys.
I'm new to your forum. Does anyone know if there are timing gears available for a 225 slant 6 instead of a timing chain? I'm looking for the timing gear sound.

I've done some looking around (I have this insatiable curiosity) and I don't think so. There's no reason they couldn't be made but I don't think anyone is.

I seem to remember that another engine (I'm thinking it's the big block Mopar) uses the same cam to crank spacing, so there's been reports of modifying a gear drive for that to fit a slant. Maybe Doc can shed some light on just which engine it is and what's required.

I wanted a gear drive something fierce.....until I did some research.
It seems they don't have the life of a good double-roller setup, they have a longer record for shedding teeth,(vs. chain) and they are real good at transmitting harmonics to the valve gear. So I went with a chain.....
That being said, if I had a "brand X" car, I'd probably have a gear drive. ,......it still has the cool facter.
I bet someone has researched this before......

Seems like a staggering amount of effort and expense for no real benefit. There are much less costly and easier-to-install noisemakers available, if that's what you're after...

This is true but the top BB cam gear will need a special spacer to work on a SL6.
As noted above, there a better things to spend your time and $$ on.

I had a '55 Chevy pickup that had a B&M straight cut gear drive and headers with Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. The cool factor wore off about 37 minutes after I bought the truck because I thought it sounded "cool".

H'mmm...there's contradictory info on this box you've pictured. In marker it says "Slant 6", but in ballpoint pen (in the lower right corner) it says "Valiant 265", which refers not to the slant-6, but to the Australian-production Hemi-6. I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure the two engines don't share a timing chain and sprockets in common.

240 and 300 Ford is gear to gear from the factory, so is the air cooled VW.

My old '56 VW had a plastic cam gear. It failed at 35K '57 they went metal to metal.

What the hell were they thinking?
