I was looking at options to put EFI in my pickup and i came across painless performance and their 4.3mpi standalone harness. I looked at the manual and i can get the rest of the parts out of the yard. I plan to turbo the truck also(I have a rayjay b25 in my living room) and i know some people have turbo'd the 4.3 vortecs so i dont think thats a problem. I was wondering if anybody here had tried one of the painless setups in their vehicle. I'm leaning towards a megasquirt kit but this vortec thing looks tempting as well. My main concern with adapting the vortec is what do i do with the distributor? any advice is appreciated |

Careful. Painless' stuff has never been especially great (except for some of their stuff specific to GM cars), and they've recently been downgrading the quality of their parts (Chinese no-name relays instead of German, Japanese or American ones, for instance).

Painless likely used the GM 7 pin HEI module. You install it like the 4 pin HEI /slant 6 EI swap. I have wired up a couple of GM EFI factory harnesses. They are high quality and easy to work with. Make sure you have a plan for containing your finished harness(tape/convoluted tubing, stainless blah blah) Get a $20 solder iron and some good solder. Have a colour print of both vehicle wiring harnesses. Test "extra" wires for voltage before snipping. I have a Vortec 5.7 TBI in my 1973 work truck. I used factory harness and a good chip burner. The only thing inside the distributor is a 7pin module a pickup and a rotor. You cant go past about 270/adv duration with a GM setup . ( No really.....you cant) Working with a turbo and milder cam could get around that. Solid lifters render knock sensors psychotic. |

Do you know the original application of that turbo? I am using a Rajay on my 170 slant. I have to check the numbers, but it was originally a Corvair unit. The early Corvair used a "B" flow, which is too small for a 170, much less a 225. The later Corvair used a "F" flow which is ok for a 170, but needs a modified compressor housing and a different exhaust housing to get over 10 lbs boost. A "E" flow can go up to about 15-18 lbs, which I do have, but haven't used yet.

the turbo i have is compareable to a t-25. which is what was reccomended to me for a stock 225 looking for 5-7psi of boost. I'd live to find an e-flow to get more boost, or i geuss i should just get a t3/t4 hybrid. cause those rajays are hard to find |

As far as I know, the Rajay is not made anymore, and parts are hard to find. It has not been a problem for me, since I have had mine for 30 some years, when they were the easiest/least expensive to get. The "E" flow I have is still new in the box. |
