I pulled the head off the 66 Dart wagon, sure enough, it has a blown head gasket... big time. Slant Six engines continue to amaze me... I can't believe we were able to drive this car 400+ miles home, towing another car! DD

Wow! This has got to rival the 198 on salad oil for a "can't kill it" durability story! |

Looks like it had 3 cylinders down, or were the other 2 torn on tear down? |

The gasket's fire rings were burned thru on 4 different cylinders. The good news is that all the piston tops look fine so everything should go back together with-out much trouble. DD |

Looks like a poster child for "mill your head and block when rebuilding, don't skip that step". Mike |

This I've got to hear.I'm amazed at that shot of the head gasket. When I blew one I didn't have anywhere near that sort of damage - then again, the only sign it was blown was that my coolant was going away and I had big clouds of steam out the exhaust, no loss of power or anything. |

Is this the stroker motor? |

Yes, this is the 260 stroker engine I built about 10 years ago. I was glad to see that the pistons and cylinder walls were all in good shape. The plan is to surface the head, deck the block and stick in a new set of rings and bearings. DD |

I would say that operating conditions may have exceeded the designed operational envelope of that particular gasket.Slant Six engines continue to amaze me... I can't believe we were able to drive this car 400+ miles home, towing another car! DD Holy carp. Any idea what triggered the failure? |

It couldn't possibly have been the full throttle sprints down the track nor the hundreds of miles towing a trailer with another car on it. LOL |

You have to see this car to believe what it does. In the hotly contested modified/pro/beater class the wagon really hauls in a lot of extra points for pulling a race car all the way there and back as well as competing. It really puts the trailer queen thing into perspective. Add to that 2 guys that are not afraid to break stuff..... Add Las Vegas is in a desert on the other side of the Cordillera... How would you like to be that 904? |

Torqueflites are tough. All they ask is to be kept reasonably cool and an oil change and band adjustment every couple of year and they're usually happy with that. I'd stack that 904 against just about anything except a 727. |
