I have a 1964 Dodge pickup, 225 slant and three on the tree. I have a chance to buy a 225 out of a 1981 car that had an automatic. Can I put this motor into this truck? I don't think the flywheel will interchange. But is it just a question of getting a flywheel out of a circa 1981 truck? I would like it to be close to a bolt-in. Is this more trouble than it is worth?? Thank you in advance |

The 81 engine will bolt into the 64 if you use the correct flywheel. You will also have to swap your current oil pan and pick-up tube onto the repalcement engine. DD |

Thank you for the quick reply! The 1964 flywheel wont fit the 1981 engine though, will it? |

Nope, different register diameter. Also check your 81 crank for a pilot bushing. By 1981 they weren't routinely installed at the factory. |

The good news is that the center register hole on the 64's flywheel is smaller then the 81, it can be machined-out to the larger size if you can't find a later flywheel. DD |

If your crank isn't machined for a pilot bushing you can go to Autozone or any parts store and get a roller pilot bearing for a V-6 Dakota truck and use it. |

Assuming your truck has the mounted bell housing, any 62 to 67 v8 flywheel will work (if you slot one crank hole on the flywheel) and will center on the late 225 crank. These flywheels need to be the right tooth count to match the direct drive starters used with the mounted bell slave clutch system. Since the trucks all went to the gear reduction starters after 71 those flywheels will not work. I can check, I may have a 225 68 truck flywheel that should work... let me know and I will dig it out..... Also, if you have never done a engine swap on one of these trucks----- you pull the trans and drop it frist, then pull everthing in front of the water pump (radiator, fan ect....) loosen bell mounts on the top one side, bottem on the other side, then pull the engine with bell attached as a unit. May sound odd to pull engine with the bell, but it is the best way...... detach bell after engine is pulled. Flywheel must come off before the bell is removed from engine (there are engine/bell bolts behind the flywheel on the \6). |

Well I picked up my '81 225 today. It looks like it is in pretty good condition and he had receipts for quite a few new parts like water pump, fuel pump, new carb etc. It is a 2-barrel and says "'Super Six" on the air filter. Any idea what the horsepower would be on this? Is it comparable to my '64 0ne-barrel engine? Also the crank is drilled for a pilot bearing so I hope the flywheel issue won't be too difficult to overcome. Thanks again and feel free to offer more advice! |

The 2bbl gives, but the '81 camshaft and its retarded timing take away. It will pay you to pull the timing cover, put in a nice new timing chain and spend some time carefully degreeing-in the cam. Also spend some time recurving the distributor.
