Hi, I just joined the site after looking for some information on my daughter's 'new' car. A '75 Swinger with the 225. We bought the car off eBay because it is a rust free car from the northwest. After having it shipped to upstate NY we have been working on getting the car back on the road and legal. So I have some questions and need some help. I think the electric choke is sticking. The car starts after you give it three or four pumps of the pedal (after it has been sitting two or three weeks), it may take two twist of the key, but it starts right up after that. We took the car out for a drive and every thing seemed good so we headed off to the inspection station to have it looked at. On the way home, some road construction forced use to go a different way home, one that was hilly. When she depressed the gas peddal past about 2/3's the way down, it went into fast idle. When it does this, snapping the peddal won't stop the fast idle. The only way to get it to drop back is to take the air cleaner cover off and push the linkage/plunger back. There is resistance as if there may be some slight ridge or wear mark on the shaft that comes out of the electric choke. Any suggestions? I was reading about the electric choke conversion kits, is this what I should do, replace with the new kit? |

Welcome to the site! You will probably want to buy all three books described in this thread. The electric choke kits are nice 'cause you replace a bunch of marginally-designed old parts with better-designed and adjustable new parts. But, it sounds like your issue may be caused by a bent choke lever or choke pull-off link that's binding up, or the choke plate itself could be hanging on the air cleaner bail, or the choke lever could be hitting the underside of the air cleaner. |

Thanks, I'll check the books out. I don't think it's the plate since that seems to moove freely, it can't be hanging up on the air cleaner because once you have it off, it still revs until you force the plunger back into the electric choke and that seems to take more effort than it should. |

Then yeah, it does sound like your choke thermostat is tweaked/bent and you'd do well to go ahead and get the electric kit. |
