I'm from Canada, the country normally associated with apologizing about everything (sorry, did that sentence run on too long?). I have a 1984 Dodge Ram B150 Van with a 3.7 slant six. Quite an engine until the oil light came on and I guessed it to be the sensor instead of the pump. The van, which I bought a couple years ago to transport my dogs, one of which is a deaf purebred Great Dane, seems to have been garaged most of it's life, showing very little rust on it's 22 year old body. I was surprised how well that seemingly small motor could carry a full sized vehicle like a van, often loaded, along quite nicely on the highway. I expect to get it back from the auto wreckers soon, with another engine the same size. I was tempted to go to a more common engine (eg. 318) but managed to find a 3.7. Anyone know how long these vans came with these engines because they are getting very hard to find, even at auto wreckers? Any information about them (pros and cons of adding performance things like turbo ect) would also be appreciated. Thanks alot, people.

Welcome aboard! Don't worry, Canada is well represented here. We're quite the international community. The UN should work as well! :D

Slants were available in trucks until '87 or so. The supply isn't as good as it once was. But it's as good once as it ever was ... oh, wait, that's a song ...

Check out the articles, then do some searching and reading here in the forum. You'll find all sorts of information on diagnosing and repairing your engine. There are also a lot of ideas on improving performance and/or efficiency.

Dig in and have fun!

Welcome on the board (and no I will not apologise for welcoming you on the board, despite living in Tronno.)

The 225 was available in vans in North America from 1964 (when the original Dodge A-100 vans were introduced) through 1987 (in the B-series vans that were introduced in 1971). For 1988, the "3/4 of a 318" 3.9 V6 was introduced as a replacement (hah!) for the 225.

It is very difficult to find used parts for old vehicles up here in the frozen/rusty North. Those in BC have it a lot easier than those of us back East (grumble). You can multiply your search efficacy by using www.car-part.com , searchable used auto parts clear across North America (and you can narrow your search field by individual state/province, region, Canada-only, US-only, etc.) Results show parts from all models and years that are an exact direct interchange; the actual interchangeability is often quite a bit wider than the results. For example, any 225 from a 1968 or later Chrysler Corp. vehicle (car, truck, van...) would've fit your '84 as long as you use the '84 oil pan and oil pickup tube. So, should you need parts in future, it's good to ask on here.

Thanks for the hearty welcome, guys. When (and if) the van is running, I'll get a picture of her to post here. The mechanic is having some problems getting the motor in and running(took him three days so far). Thought it would be easier with a big van and a little motor, but apparently not.

I will definitely have to keep checking here for information on maintaining this little motor of mine. It's good to be a member of the "Automotive United Nations". Hope it doesn't mean I have to learn any languages (currently struggling with english, after 42 years of it being my first language). Fact is, I've met some truly amazing mechanics over the years, who don't have a licence, or a garage. They simply love working on cars. A wise man once said, "I'd rather be a failure at something I love, than a success at something I hate". That wise man was George Burns.

Al T, I'm in a small town west of Edmonton, but was a Calgary Flames fan when i used to watch hockey. Quit watching it after the strike and Bertuzzi got away with attempted murder. Now if the sport doesn't have an engine, i don't really bother with it.
