Post subject:  Engine "Tap" Question

Hi Folks,

I'm looking at a '67 slant six on ebay (link is below). This would be for rebuilding to drop into my Dart.

The owner says it has a "Tap" to it when it has been sitting for a while, but then it goes away as it warms up.

Anyone have ideas as to what this is likely to be? Simple bearing issue or something more complex like turning a crankshaft to repair it?

It's in my neck of the woods, and comes with a 904.

Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0098756416

Thanks for opinions and advice.

I read it as, it taps until oil pressure gets to where it ought to be. I'm not well versed on /6's yet, but I thought they were all solid lifter, at least until the late 70's, so it's not a lifter filling issue. I'm wondering if the oil pump is just dry, and it takes a moment to to reprime, maybe some anti-drain back valve not working properly. Maybe a loose bearing, but it doesn't sound bad.

If it quits when it warms up, it doesn't sound like bearing noise to me. Sounds more like piston slap. I think it is fairly typical for piston slap to occur when cold and disappear once warmed up. Also, I don't think it's a problem that necssarily needs repair...I've heard that if it isn't too bad and you drive it gently until warm, you can continue to drive with no worries. Davey

Does it have the orignal engine in it if so it Could also be a vavle lash a little loose cold and clears up when hot. If is close enuff to here the engine run and drive it say 5 miles check and see if the oil light comes on at idle. Thanks Ron Parker :D

I guess I don't get it--I mean, it only taps if it sits for a week or two? It sounds like the oil finally all drains back to the pan, and something runs dry until it gets refilled with oil. It couldn't be anything in the tranny either?

It still doesn't sound like anything too bad. I mean, if you're going to tear it apart, if you don't spend too much you should still have lots of usable parts, even if something vital is shot (crank or block).

I guess you doint get it. If it has the oringal engine in it would be a mechincal cam engine. Do you know if that is right. Does it have the original engine in it Got to know what we are dealing with here trying to help Also could be a check vavle issue. Thanks Ron Parker :D

Ummm...one quick thing: That '67 engine isn't going to mate up to your '68 transmission unless you have a special torque converter custom-built.

Thanks everyone.

You are correct Dan... I was thinking about the differences in crankshafts last night.

Maybe this one will have to pass.
