Post subject:  Cranking but no fire !

Hi Everyone -

Have put the Dart back together after the paint job and have been driving it over the last month. My car / build is referenced here: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8938
It has been running great...up till today !! Went to start it up and all it does is crank and not fire. I have checked the ballast resistor, coil, harness connection between distributor and control module (orange box) and all have 11-12 volts at positive side. I inspected the distributor. The rotor and cap look good. I took off the coil wire at the distributor and held it to the block while cranking the engine - no visible spark !! Is this my weak link ? Is the coil (newer Accel) bad ? Could the control module be causing this non-fire condition ?

Fyi - I installed new magnecor wires and NGK plugs per Dan's recommendation and the Dart was running great up till today !! :)

Please give me your thoughts and additional leads / ideas to track down.

Thanks

H'mm. Bad orange box comes to mind! You can quickly test the coil by disconnecting the two primary wires from it, running a wire from +12v to the coil (+) terminal and, while holding the coil's spark cable about 1/4" away from the cylinder head, alternately making and breaking the connection between the coil (-) terminal and ground via another test wire. If you get a spark, replace the orange box, perhaps with the HEI upgrade, installing at the same time a NAPA Echlin long-tip rotor # MO-3000 and Standard-Bluestreak CH-410X cap.

Thanks for the test idea on the coil. I'll perform that test tomorrow morning and let you know what happens. If I end up replacing the coil, I'll try the MSD-2 (8202) blaster this time in place of the Accel.

Yes, I have already placed an order with NAPA for the Echlin rotor and will pick it up on Monday. I need to order the Std/Blstrk cap from another parts store this week. I'll put those on when I gather the parts. The existing rotor and cap are the MP electronic distributor package I purchased 5 years ago. They only have approx. 6K miles on them.

I am impressed with the Magnecor wire set (8.5mm) I ordered. They were cut to the proper lengths. All I had to do was transfer over the 'boots' and they look great !

Too early to tell / report on the NGK's performance at this time :)

Thanks Dan

Performed the coil test per Dan's recommendation. Yes, there is a spark. Looks like I'll be purchasing a new orange box this week.

Thanks for the assistance Dan.

I wouldn't. See here.

If you're keeping the Mopar type box rather than switching to HEI, you can do much better with a Standard-Bluestreak or NAPA Echlin box than with the junk Mopar are selling now.
