I have a 1970 Dart w/ a slant six.

So, I'm driving down the street and the car just cuts out. Power's fine, all fliud's there... but the car stalls, right. So I roll over to the side of the road, wait a minute, and it starts right back up when I try. Drives fine for the rest of the trip (went straight home, naturally).

That's happened twice now, both times me being able to start back up almost right away. No signs of the car dying right before it happens.

Lately I've been having this problem where the alternator guage will go all the way to C and the lights will get real bright and the radio will turn off. Could that be relateD? I posted on another forum and a guy said it was probably the Voltage Limiter, or Regulator... Would a fault in those cause the stalling? Why? Killing the gas pump or something? Why didn't it stall before?

Also, should i be driving it? I have another car I've been driving but I'd rather drive the Dart if it's no big deal, I just don't want to be stranded or hurt the car.

"Just cuts out" is almost always electrical related. A loss of fuel problem will generally cause a sputter, then the engine dies.

You could have a number of problems. Check the connections on your coil. Disconnect the battery, then pull the plugs that go to the firewall and check for corrosion. It is entirely possible that you have a bad voltage regulator, consider replacing it after checking to be sure it is grounded.

Your fuel is delivered by a mechanical fuel pump, electrical issues will not affect it.

You'll want to get the three books described in this thread to get up to speed on how your car works and how to fix it when it doesn't.

Fix that charging system problem right away, because if you continue driving with periodic high-voltage spikes like this, the damage will be extensive and costly. The problem is most likely with your voltage regulator and/or the quality of its ground connection.

Cutting out such as you describe is likely a faulty connection somewhere in the electrical system. The bulkhead disconnect (where all the wires go through the car's firewall, over on the driver's side) is a good place to start looking.

Yeah, basically the entire electrical system is pretty shot, the wiring all llooks like hell and it's a mess too. But, I'm glad that's it, at least wiring is cheap!
