Changed the oil in my diff today and discovered that it has a Sure Grip! Also found out from the (nearly kaput) tag that it's sportin' a 3.55 gear ratio. Very, very cool. I was planning to put this ratio in at some point if it had a lower gear, but I'll leave that right where it is. Only complaint was that I didn't pick up any limited slip additive while I was out earlier. Fortunately the shop had some on hand.

A 904 I would assume. 3-speed auto, and I wouldn't expect to see a 727 come stock behind a slant, even as a factory option.

The car WAS originally bought from Plymouth by the WA State Department of Ecology, so maybe the rear was a special order?

Cannot imagine why a government agency would order a ratio that would make the car thoroughly unpleasant and highly uneconomical at speed above about 45 mph. I think probably a previous owner swapped in this rear axle you've found.

3.23s or 2.93s would be much more appropriate for all-around use on the street.

That'd make sense. It looked to be in pretty good shape though, so either way, at least now I don't have to do the work myself of swapping out the gears for the 833OD. So at least there was some good news for me today.

I think Dan's right about a past swap, but governments do buy some interesting hardware now and then. Remember the EPA's Superbird ?

Looks under the seats for the Build Sheet, too. Alway cool to find that, plus it might confirm the gears if the data plate wont.
