Post subject:  Timing chain covers/ dampener compatability

My 61 170 did not have a "bolt on" timing indicator when I bought my toad. Apparently the last rebuilder forgot to put it on. I would like to install a "tab" type cover.

In the pictures below are 2 covers. The red cover is one I had and the blue scuzzy looking one is supposed to be matched to the pictured dampener. Notice the difference between the seal seat(white arrows). There is appx. .196 difference.

The cover on my toad looks like the blue scuzzy one.

How " mixable" are covers and dampeners on the /6?
Will either cover work and is it just a question of where the seal runs on the dampener hub? I need some help here. Thanks

All SL6 covers will interchange and bolt-onto any SL6 block.
The dampener must match the timing tab / mark, the marks position can be checked using a positive stop on the piston.

There are two different seals used, early seals pressed-in from the inside of the cover, (back) the later covers have a seal that is pressed-in from the front. (outside).

Timing tab location is the main concern for me, I like the later "welded-on tab" covers, where the tab can be viewed from the passenger side of the engine, that way I can operate the timing light, view the mark and turn the distributor all at the same time.
