Removing Bell housing/Clutch housing from a slant 6

Are there any hidden bolts i have to remove all i can see from the side of the engine and one toward the top..

Are there any hidden inside the Bell/clutch housing?

This is a Manual Bell/Clutch housing..

On the Auto Bell housing it looks like they all come in from the back.. But on the Manual looks like most come from the front..

Most slant Bellhousings that I have worked with have two to 3 Bolts on the front side of the bell (front of car) mostlyu toward the drivers side and near starter area, and 3 that face rearward ( on right sideof motor)

The 2 top bolst can be a challenge to get to, espically without a long extension and a wobbly end.

Sometimes if you lower the back of the motor - (tranny out) it makes access easier to these bolts.

If you have a truck Bell, there could be hidden bolts that I am unaware of - as I have only worked on a and f body slants.

If you have the big 11 inch truck clutch with the dual pattern cast iron bellhousing, there will be 3 bolts on the inside, behind the flywheel.

Thanks,

It is a 1970 Truck and i am pretty sure Doug is right.. It is definitely a Bell housing with more then one pattern on in Big and Iron..

The truck had an A-250 attached to it and another in the Bed.. Just couldn't get the Clutch to disengage enough to get the truck into 1st or reverse when running..

Aquired a 727 from an 81-83 Slant truck..

-Thanks

as far as the bolts go, it should be the same issue, have to
pull the flywheel to gain access.......
The main differaces with the 69 and later are
no crossmember mount for the bell- moved to a rear trans mount-
and clutch linkage instead of hydro linkage......
engine needs to be braced to remove the trans, or brace
trans in place- ...
bell still comes with engine.....
Bell should have both \6 and small block v8 bolt pattern.
The early bell will also have the Flat head pattern (not yours).
since your going auto trans it all has to come out anyway.....
you 'should be able to use' the crossmember mount you
have now for the auto trans.....

I was wondering on your np250, does it have a slip yoke
tail shaft? or is it just a u-joint tail shaft, with the splines
in the driveline?

Not sure how to answer your question..

On the back of the A-250 there are splines and a regular Yolk that is part of the drive shaft slides in..

It is the "Regular" setup i see on most vehicles..

It is not ball and trunnion or anything.

I will however at minimum exchange the Yolks (I did get one from the truck the TRanny came from.. The Auto tranny yolk is of a larger diameter.. I may have to have 2-3 inches taken of the length of the drive shaft..

Uncertain until i get the new tranny mounted...

Additionally the drive shaft on the donor and the recipient are one piece..

a Regular u-joint at both ends..

Sorry it is taking so long to respond so primary vehicle failures..

1987 Mercedes 300D Voltage regulator but Starter was replaced during troubleshooting and Alternator almost was..

1990 Trooper did valve adjustment accidentally turned engine the wrong direction.. Who knows possible Lobe - otomy.... Won't start now.. Great.. That is my Parts gathering vehicle..

When the slant is done it will probably end up on the Trooper slot as general backup to the Merc and Parts grabber.. So will be close to a daily driver..

:-)

Thanks

I was just wondering about the rear case because I just sent
a A250 73 car trans off to wildcat so they could use it for parts
from my scamp (rear housing was at the bushing was shot).
Rear slip yoke type case.

Also sent a A754 65 truck trans, this trans has the slip joint
built into the drive line and a fixedn yoke joint on the rear of trans.

Just trying to see differances in years and applications......
