Post subject:  Rear Axle Swap on a 66 Cuda

My Barracuda is finally going to get disc brakes on the front, due to finding a whole kit in someone's barn, what a score.

But now this brings up a problem as the front bolt pattern won't match the back.

So what options are there for rear axles, I'm kinda on a tight budget since I blew so much money in the motor, 225 bored 40 over, decked, running headers, Clifford intake, and four barrel (not to mention the transmission is going to have to go soon too, so have to keep some money aside for that too. )

I'd love to go disc brakes on the back, but just upgrading to the larger bolt pattern in the back is all that is needed at the moment. The shop I go to can manage modifications, but of course the more mods the more money it costs me.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

A rear axle swap that is gaining in popularity is the Ford Ranger 7.5 or 8.8" axle.

Many of these have "positraction", some have disk brakes.

Ratios run from 3.08 right up into the 4s.

Here is a website with axle sizes and codes which can be read right off a sticker on the driver's door.

Both the 7.5 and the 8.8 are stronger than a 7.25 Chrysler rear end.

From a Ranger it is a pretty straight-forward swap. Taken from an Explorer will give you a stronger axle but involves shortening one side.

I'll talk it over with my mechanic and see what we can do on Monday, but thanks for the info, I was planning a junkyard visit this Friday anyway so I'll check what I can find locally.
