Since they're fairly inexpensive, I figure I'll go ahead and install a new speedo cable assembly so it'll last me until I can (properly) convert all my gauges over to Autometer. Looking on Rockauto, the only cable listed for my '74 Duster is an 80" cable. This sounds WAY too long to me. Looking on Napa, they list a 68" cable. So my question is: what's the proper length cable for my car?

Also, assuming my car came stock with a 7 1/4" axle and 2.93 gears Vs. the 3.55 gears it has now, what speedo drive gear would I want in my transmission to ensure that the speedo stays accurate? I wish I could just find out if what's in there is accurate, but there haven't been any "your speed is..." units put up around here in a long time.

Standard equipment was 2.76 with automatic transmission. Here is a speedo pinion selection chart. It lists the 7-digit part numbers, which were thoughtfully assigned such that the last two digits of the P/N was the number of teeth on the pinion. Along came Daimler, and in their finest precision German manner, promptly assigned new (and random) 8-digit numbers to these pinions. Somehow, this is evidence that the "merger of equals" worked.

Pick the 68" cable.

Thanks Dan. You're lucky I don't have your phone number. You'd be on speed dial :P
