hi sl6 sages- thought i knew a lot about the sl6, but one can always afford to learn more. my topic is the 80 aspen sl6. been researching engine in haynes, chilton and among those who appear to be in the know. here are my findings which i would appreciate a critique on from those who know better than me. this may be a job for superman(di, sl6dan, the doctor or volaredon). the 80 aspen. 1. did not have hydraulic valves, had mechanicals just like the old engines(book specs say .10 and .20 for valve adjustments through 80sl6sand then say 81 and up is hyd. 2. no computer, no lean burn box onthe side of the air cleaner. 3 . regular electronic ignition and distributor as they all had since 73. 4. factory 3spd floorshift is made by inland not hurst as in the 4spd od. 4. rear end is 8 1/4 with 2.9 or 3.2 gear(cant read bolt tag), betting its a 2.9 due to gas mileage pressures of the day. 5. mystery remains regarding diagnostic plug on right fender wall- no one seems to know here, not in books either- how could it have this plug and no computer?6. 3spd manual must be a 230 since it has synchro on 1st. thanks for you advice sages. bf |

going by color codes in the connector. black= ground red= 12 v positive dark green= same as dak green on the voltage regulator dark blue= same as dark blue on the voltage regulator yellow= same as yellow wire on starter relay (coil), which is 12 v in ign sw start position brown/yellow= ground side of of starter relay coil tan= same as brown wire on starter relay, will go to 12v when starter relay engages. |

My 80 Volare' had that too.Now don't quote me because I might deny it ,,,but if I remember Mopar had a box that service tech's used for diagnostics with red and green lights on it for a go no-go tool. Why ? I can't remember. It may have been added to the service manual as a service bulletin update. |

Haynes and Chilton books are full of misinformation. You will want a factory service manual. See this thread.Quote: did not have hydraulic valves, had mechanicals just like the old engines(book specs say .10 and .20 for valve adjustments
All of this is correct except your decimal is off. Solid lifters, 0.010" clearance on the intakes, 0.020" on the exhausts, per [url=http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=72139&highlight=#72139]valve adjustment procedure.Quote: no computer, no lean burn box onthe side of the air cleaner. regular electronic ignition and distributor as they all had since 73.
Pretty sure Lean Burn was used on some slant-6s in '80. Could be a California-only deal, not sure.Quote: factory 3spd floorshift is made by inland not hurst as in the 4spd od.
Fairly certain the 4spd OD shifter was not made by Hurst, could be wrong.Quote: rear end is 8 1/4 with 2.9 or 3.2 gear(cant read bolt tag), betting its a 2.9 due to gas mileage pressures of the day
3.23 standard equipment with stick-shift transmission of either variety. 2.76 standard equipment with automatic trans except in wagons which often got 2.94.Quote: mystery remains regarding diagnostic plug on right fender wall- no one seems to know here
Been addressed in other threads, probably for assembly line use only.
