Post subject: | New Guy With a New 62 Dart 440 |
Hey all, Just joined the board a few days ago, beenlurking around and getting some ideas. Just picked up a 1962 Dart 440 for a hell of a deal. Its got a few issues, such as a leaking master cylinder and the rear main is blown. I have a complete front suspension out of a 73 duster, so that should solve all of my braking issues. As for the engine I plan on pulling it out and having the block and head milled and decked square, and installing new bearings, cam, main and rod. I've done my share of SB Mopars, so having 2 less cylinders to work with should be nice. But the car itself is absolutly cherry, very little rust and no real damage, and for the price I paid, I couldn't be happier. I plan on making it a daily driver. My biggest concern will be the ignition. I still haven't decided how I want to upgrade it, but we'll cross the hurdle when I get there. Right now an electronic distributor and an MSD setup will probably be the best. I'm having trouble uploading pictures to Photobucket, but I'll get them up when I can. |

Quote: Hey all,
I'm not sure, but I don't think the 73 Duster brake parts will work on the 62 Dart. The Duster is an "A" body car, the Dart is the forerunner of a "B" body. You might want to post this question in the "suspension and brake" forum

Welcome on the board! Hope you'll be showing us some pics of your '62. Take a few more looks around and ask some questions before you start in on the engine; you may encounter some ideas and alternatives that hadn't occurred to you for performance improvements. Erson's running a really good cam deal at the moment, for example, which you can read about here. As Charrlie_S mentions, that A-body suspension you mention may not be such a good match on your B-body car. There are lots of options for B-body brake and suspension upgrades, so you shouldn't find yourself stuck in a corner on that one. Ignition: Do the HEI upgrade, install a NAPA Echlin long-tip rotor # MO-3000 with Standard-Bluestreak CH410X cap and (if you have a '74-down head w/spark plug tubes) put in NGK ZFR5N plugs gapped to 0.045"...and wind up with equal ignition spark and better reliability at lower cost than if you'd bought MSD. ![]() |

yeah, sure. ![]() In fact them fancy MSD box have a HEI module stuffed inside and some old rusty bolts to add some weight, then all the box is cleverly covered with resin goo so you won't be able to tell the difference. ![]() |

Thanks for the links guys, saved me a few hours searching through the archives. I'm pretty settled on an MSD 6 box and the Electronic Dist. Of all the mopars I own, I just can't imagine running inferior GM or Ford parts, no matter how simple or cheap they may be. Looks like I'll have to do some measuring on the suspension bits. |

The GM HEI is a considerably better ignition than Mopar EI.

Quote: didn't the nasa use a HEI module on the challenger?
They did, but that's not what caused the explosion. (It was the NGK ZFR5N spark plugs, the launch switch bought from Mitchell's, and their failure to spin the power steering pump with an electric motor.)![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

"Spoils of War"Seriously, the other companies have made some good parts. HEI is one. Something about a blind pig and acorns ... ? ![]() |
