I have a '67 Valiant with a 170 slant six. It has no spark. Points are not forzen, but I can't get the distributor out. Is it just held in by one bolt? Also, are 170 and 225 distributors interchangeable?

I'm a V8 guy - this six is kickin' my azz. :(

Yes, just the one bolt holding the clamp

Yes. There are variations in Slant Six distributors for various timing curves, electronic vs. points, Lean Burn, etc., but they should all physically fit.

It shouldn't, really. The basics still apply, and it's a simpler engine.

No spark at all? Do you get anything while cranking?

The usual suspects: Points, plugs, ballast resistor, coil, grounds, ignition switch ... A bad gear is also a possibility.

While you're in there, consider the Mopar Electronic or HEI options.

If you have the cap off you can see a little silver can next to the points. Its a condensor . If you have weak or itermittant spark at your points it may be the culprit.

....but first

Make sure you have voltage to the positive side of the coil when the key is on.....

Post subject:  Stuck

I've had several times that a distributor was stuck. It's usually because it hasn't been moved in decades and it has fused itself to the block. Never fear, a little spray lube in the right motion will free it up in short order.

First off, you will need to get the distributor body to turn before it will pull out. Yes, there is just one screw holding it down. See if you can get some lube under the hold down to soak things loose. Now force the body of the distributor to spin with a screwdriver or strap wrench. Don't try to force the center shaft to spin, that will just bust the teeth off the bottom gear.

Good luck

I took the bolt holding the distributor down out. The distributor rotates but won't come out.

I have a new ballast resistor and tried two different coils (one of a running car). I'll dig more into it this weekend. Friggin' Wells ignition catalog doesn't even list a part number for slant six points or tune up kit anymore. What's the world coming to?
