OK this is a question for all you mechanics. I broke a pushrod and it pushed out the lifter. Is there a trick to putting a lifter back in its hole? I tried using a magnet but cant seem to make it slide down in. Just a dumb question from someone who gets frustrated. Trying to make the Valdosta race and it is looking pretty slim unless I can figure this out.

The lifter needs to be perfectly aligned with the lifter bore to go in.
Keep trying different angles.
Also check the lifter to be sure it is not nicked along the edge, sanding a slight radius onto the edge may help.

Norm, Do you have the late style head, or the early drool tube head? If the late head, you are just going to have to keep playing with it. If the early head, pull the lifter completly out, and see if it has a sharp edge or knick. Like Doc said, break the edge with some emery paper, or a stone. Make sure the lifter bore does not have a peened edge. They must be started straight.

Norm, Rob posted this.

Hey guys.

It looks like Frank won't be able to make it for the race after all, so the blue Duster that ran 15.85 at this race last year is available if anyone wants to use it. The shop where it is stored (Stockbridge, GA) should have gone through it and gotten it ready to race for the most part. I can verify that today.

If anyone is interested just shoot me a PM.

If you can't get your engine fixed, maybe this would work for you.

Charlie I have the old style I think it has spark plug tubes. I am trying to use a magnet to line up the lifter but it sure is frustrating. This is all I like so I can replace the push rods and redo the valve lash. My old push rods were 10.000 and .080 and the new ones from Smith Brothers are 10.000 and .083 I hope these work ok. They are just a tick longer looks like to me. The Smith Brothers has a ball on one end and the one I took out are just rounded.

Are the old pushrods and the new pushrods, the same on both ends? IE: cup on one and and ball on the other end? Are you going to use the same rocker arms?

Charlie the new push rods have a ckup on one end and a ball on the other. The old push rods only have a cup on them. I have a set of 1.5 roller rockers I am using.

The new pushrods should work fine.

Try the sanded edge deal Doc mentioned and go buy a long needle nose pliers if the magnet won't work to get the angles right. It is tough to get them in if the edge is nicked or extra sharp.

Or, bring it to the race and Charlie will stick his fingers in there and fix it in 10 min and you'll be on the track.

You can do it!!

I agree, the pushrods should be OK.
Did you get the lifter in? If you want, bring the car down, to the track, and I'm sure, we can fix it there.

Good News I finished up the repairs late last night and fired the engine up and hopefully everything will be fine. So I will see everyone on Saturaday morning in Valdosta. Just hope the cup that came off the old pushrod is in the bottom of the oil pan. See ya Sat.

See you Sat. I will be gettimg there Fri morning, and will try to have a pit area reserved, about the same place as last year. Look for my RV, and a terrible looking 66 Valiant.
