Post subject:  hei conversion/spark plug questions/tip on coil sale

hey guys ,starting to work on dads 64 a 100, the stock dist has been converted with a kind of hokey looking electronic package, found the control box oozing blue goo under the passenger seat, putting a 73 engine in, it has the stock electronic dist, since we dont have a good shape chrysler box sitting around, i thought it would be about as economical, and since the wires are not there for the box in the truck anyway, easier, and ive been wanting to try it for a while, to do an hei conversion, so ive read dans article, and i think im good, but im wondering if an accel super stock coil will work for this? someone said that an accel super coil would be good, so i wanted to double check before trying it, its the 8140, primary resist 1.2 Ohms secondary 8.9 k Ohms; turn ratio 100:1; max voltage 42000V...which brings me to the next point, at my local autozone, these things were 70% off, which makes them less then 10 bucks with tax, or you could get the chrome one for 38....i dont know if its national or not, but for what its worth, i dont buy starters and such at autozone, but i figure an accel coil wouldnt be something they could mess up, the other question is i read on here that you dont need the spark plug rings in a 63-74 head, is that after the hei swap or for any 63-74 slant application? thanks! im excited to get this thing going!

I am running HEI (4-pin module from the junkyard) with an Accel 8140 Supercoil (yellow) like you describe. My coil is old and grungy now, but works just fine. I gap the plugs to 0.040".
You should remove the spark plug gasket(ring) for your '64 head. Ignition type doesn't matter on this.

Yes, the little ring/washer/metal gasket that comes on the spark plugs. Cut them off, twist, unscrew, whatever technique works for you.

If you have heads with the spark plug tubes (and it's not one of the first couple of years of the slant six, 60-62 IIRC), you shouldn't use them.

I believe '74 was the last year for the plug tubes. Later heads use a different plug and seat.
